Ants

There are 57 species of ants in Manitoba. This thatching ant species can have 60,000 to each colony with 40-60 queens. The ants' nest can be identified on the prairie by its bright patch of green grass, where loose debris has been collected and assembled, and where decomposing material has been dragged underground, enriching the soil. Although ants are a benefit to the ecology of the prairie, the thatching ant can swarm, bite and release formic acid on humans if they get too close to them.
