Cool And Warm Season Grasses
There are two types of grasses: cold season grasses and warm season grasses. Cool season grasses begin to reproduce in the fall and set in with the lengthening of the warmth in the spring. Native species of cool season grasses include Spear grass and June grass. Warm season grasses’ reproduction is triggered when the days shorten, and are set up during the growing season of spring and summer.
Of the cool grasses, Spear grass is particularly interesting, as its seeds are found at the tip of the plant, an extending 'awn' some 8-10 cm in length. With the right temperature and humidity, the ‘awn’ will twist and fall, where the seeds will work to corkscrew themselves into the ground to germinate.
