Winter Weather Patterns
In the winter, prevailing winds to the region come from the north, because of the darkness that lies over the arctic during much of the day, allowing big pools of cold air to build up. Big pools of air are short-lived; where at Winnipeg's latitude low-pressure systems pass the area. Southerly winds bring higher temperatures, while northerly winds bring lower temperatures, and experiencing a dip into the –20 and -30degrees Celsius range is common. Sometimes this pressure system can remain locked for days or weeks. Luckily, storms can change the system, bringing warmer weather, thus varying winter temperatures.
