Wolf Willow
The Wolf-willow is a plant that is able to 'fix' nitrogen, and does not require a high level of moisture to survive. Pioneers used it as a windbreak, as it grows quickly and easily roots itself, despite the harsh prairie conditions.
The Wolf-willow’s fruit, which is a hard seed, ripens between July and August but disperses in the winter. They are blown across the snow, or eaten by rabbits or deer and then regenerated through their digestive systems.
